There is something incredibly special about eating food you grew yourself.
Today was my first ever garden harvest, though it wasn’t a huge harvest by any means. I gathered fresh basil, thyme, parsley, and about fifteen tiny blueberries. Fifteen blueberries probably wouldn’t impress an experienced gardener, but to me, they felt like treasure. Every single one was the result of weeks of watering after work, checking on my plants every evening, pulling the occasional weed, and quietly hoping everything would survive my complete lack of gardening experience.
When I first planted this little garden, I wasn’t thinking about harvests. I just wanted to create a peaceful corner of my backyard. A place where I could escape the noise of everyday life. I added herbs, vegetables, berry bushes, a few shrubs, bunny-shaped solar lights, string lights, a small fire pit, and comfortable chairs. Slowly, my empty backyard transformed into a place that feels like it belongs to me.
Somewhere along the way, the garden became more than just a pretty space.
It became a lesson in patience.
Plants don’t care if you’re impatient. They don’t rush because you’re excited. They grow on their own schedule, quietly doing their thing while you simply show up each day and take care of them. There’s something oddly comforting about that.
So today, instead of simply snacking on my blueberries, I decided to celebrate them.
I baked the tiniest little blueberry thyme spice cake using the berries I had just picked and a few sprigs of fresh thyme from the garden. Then I made myself a warm cup of chamomile tea, sat outside, and enjoyed every bite.
Was it the fanciest dessert I’ve ever made? Not even close.
Was it one of the most satisfying?
Absolutely.
There is a different kind of pride that comes from creating something with ingredients you’ve nurtured from the very beginning. You remember planting the tiny herb seedlings. You remember wondering if the blueberry bush would ever produce fruit. Then one day you’re standing in your kitchen, using those same ingredients to bake yourself a little treat.
It makes you appreciate food in a completely different way.
I’ve noticed that gardening has slowly changed how I move through my evenings. Instead of rushing from one thing to the next, I find myself wandering outside to see what’s changed. I check for new tomatoes, admire the raspberries that are starting to ripen, smell the basil, and watch the garden grow one tiny step at a time.
It’s become less about productivity and more about presence.
My first harvest may have been small, but it reminded me that not every accomplishment has to be big to be meaningful. Sometimes joy comes in handfuls instead of baskets. Sometimes it’s fifteen blueberries, a few herbs, a homemade cake, and a quiet evening with a cup of tea.
And somehow, that’s more than enough.
Journal Prompt:
What’s something small you’ve created recently that made you feel unexpectedly proud? It doesn’t have to be perfect. Sometimes the smallest victories end up meaning the most.
Mini Blueberry Thyme Spice Cake:
Ingredients:
4 Tbsp. Flour
2 Tbsp. White sugar
1/2 Tsp. Baking powder (peaked)
1/4 Tsp. Nutmeg
1/2 Tsp. Ground Cinnamon
1/8 Tsp. Salt
1 Large egg
3 Tbsp. Milk (any variety of milk is fine, I personally used almond milk)
1 Tsp. Vanilla
2 Tsp. Vegetable Oil
3 Tbsp. Fresh blueberries
1 Tbsp. Fresh Thyme leaves
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a small baking dish with cooking spray (I used about a 4×4 inch dish).
Mix together the dry ingredients, then the wet ingredients, and then combine the mixtures. Gently fold in the blueberries and pour mixture into the prepped dish. Sprinkle the top with the fresh thyme.
Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Enjoy with a dollop of whipped cream!
